1. If my independent variable is height and my dependent variable is weight, am I most likely looking at “differences” or “a relationship”? Please explain why.
2. What is the difference between descriptive and inferential statistics? Obviously only a crude (but accurate) answer is necessary.
3. What is the scale of measurement for the variable “year of birth”?
1.usually we would like to write the difference between independent and dependent variables but in this case we should look for the relationship between independent variable HEIGHT and dependent variable WEIGHT. Because we can observe a scenario that those who are tall they have more weight than short people. so people's height might effect people's weight. although independent term is not pitch perfect but we are considering this. Therefore if I will take an Independent variable X as height and if I add a constant c with it then Y is a dependent variable (weight) . Y=X+c.which indicate if I increase height , Weight would be increased. so we can define it as a relationship .
2. actually in descriptive statistics we deal with a sample I mean a small certain data size. At first we can record the data and take the group of the data. We are not gonna take any large data or population. In this we don't need to infer about the result or something.Easily we will calculate the mean , median and mode of the given data. After taking the summary of the data we can plot it what we have and we can visualize. Chart, graph and tables are only outcome of descriptive statistics. But in case of inferential statistics we have a large size of population but its not handy to calculate then we draw a certain size of sample of population and then we need to define the probability of event and estimate the parameter. confidence interval , hypothesis testing and regression analysis are the significant tools to calculate inferential statistics. Here we can get a prognosis about given population from the drawn sample.
3.usually continuous and ratio variables are used to define YEAR OF BIRTH. because zero point has a meaning which indicate the birth of a person. and it is continuous if we calculate it meticulously.
