Uterine Rupture- Is a rare and
absolute obstetrical emergency with high maternal and fetal
mortality and morbidity.
Causes/Risk factors of Uterine
rupture:
- Normal delivery after Previous
caesarean section – as muscles around scar are weak and may
rupture under forceful contraction of normal delivery
- Previous uterine surgery – such
as myomectomy can make uterine muscles weak and prone to
rupture
- Excessive use of uterotonics
(Prostaglandin, oxytocin) for augmentation of labour can cause
forceful and inco-ordinated (too long and too frequent) uterine
contraction and increases risk of uterine rupture
- Uterine overdistention - by
Multiple pregnancy, Polyhydromnios can cause incordinated uterine
contraction of overstretched uterine muscles.
- Grand Multipara- As the birth
order increases the uterus becomes weaker and more prone to
rupture
- Iatrogenic causes- External and
internal fetal version, difficult forcep deliveries. destructive
