As diabetes is growing threat today. Role of doctor , nurse , pharmacist, etc becomes important.
When doctor prescribe oral anti glycemic drug for diabites pharmacist has to inform patient about dosage , time when drug should be taken and teaching to prevent it adverse effects.
First thing pharmacist should inform patient about when to take the regimen in day. For example some drug are taken 2 times a day , some once a day and some before meal. So whether to take drug in morning, afternoon, evening , night should be informed. And patient should be told to take medicine on time.
Another thing to be informed is whether to take the drug before or after meals. So pharmacist should tell the patient to take drug before the meal as it could prevent hypoglycemia due to drug. And patient should adviced to not to skip meal after taking the drug as it can lead to severe hypoglycemia which is a serious medical emergency and require immediate hospitalization.
If patient is on insulin therapy he should be taught how to take the injection. And he should be told to take injection daily at a fix time and don't change the time everyday. As it can lead to serious adverse affects. The patient should be told to change the site of injection to prevent lipodystrophy at the site.
Patient should have a keen time table of meals in day to Prevent hypoglycemia . Patient should be adviced not to skip meals and adviced to eat small amounts at regular intervals.
Other drugs taken together can lead to drug interactions with antidiabetic drugs. So patient should inform the doctor about other drugs taken.
Patient should be adviced to do little exercise and walking and maintain calories intake by following strict diabetic diet plan.
