In the Musculoskeletal System and Connective Tissue chapter of ICD-10-CM, what is the difference between a pathological fracture and a traumatic fracture? Give an example of a scenario for coding a pathological fracture. Along with your example, provide the ICD-10-CM code(s) that would be assigned for the scenario. Be sure to follow coding guidelines and instructional notes, and assign the appropriate 7th character if needed.
A pathological fracture is fracture that occurs due to a disease and not by an injury.It can happened through a weakened bone due to tumour,osteoporosis or metabolic bone disease.In this fracture break of bone is due to underlying disease.
A traumatic fracture is a fracture that occurs due to an accident or fall.Traumatic fracture can be due to a motor accident or due to any fall.
Scenario For pathological fracture
A 65 year old female came into ED with a left shoulder fracture.This fracture occurs that while she was trying to take a bottle from the upper shelf.She heard a crack followed by severe left shoulder pain.EMS transported her to hospital and x-ray shows that she has fracture of left shoulder.She is on no specific medication and has been on good nutritional status.
This female has no fall or accident so this indicates that it is a pathological fracture due to age related osteoporosis
in this case ICD -10-CM of this patient is M84.412:Pathological fracture of the left shoulder.
The seventh character denote the encounter and
A=Initial encounter for fracture
D= Subsequent encounter for fracture with routine healing
G= Subsequent encounter for fracture with delayed healing
K=Subsequent encounter for fracture with non union
P=Subsequent encounter for fracture with malunion
S=Sequela
In this patient this is her first encounter with the fracture so M84.412A is the ICD-10CM code
