The distance between the front edge of the objective lens and the cover slip(thin glass plate to cover the specimen mounted on the slide) is known as working distance of the microscope.

As the magnification or the numerical aperture is increased, the working distance decreases.

Therefore, working distance is indirectly proportional to magnification.
