What does it mean that femininity and masculinity are socially constructed? What does this assume about gender? How should we think of gender roles knowing that gender is a social construction?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Gender is a social construct, just like the race. Men for long dominated the world and women, so, they defined what a man and woman should do at home and in the society. In the process, men took all the privileges and limited the women within the house. This means men made women believe that they are inferior to them. Women endured lots of struggle because they were considered as the sexual pleasure centers and household maids who would look after the children and do all the household chores. Men on the other, were able to go out, earn, protect the family and participate in social events. Today, everything is proven wrong as women shape the society on par with men supporting the argument that gender is a social construct. Women have spread their wings everywhere and they are able to progress comfortably and they do far better than women. Nevertheless, the discrimination and stereotyping continue in most of the societies, although they have come to understand the importance of equality.
