Self-concept is the idea or belief one has about oneself with the help of others. This would mean one’s self-concept would be constructed and formed with the help of one’s environment such as, parenting, education, employment, culture, religion etc. that would help one form one’s worldview and opinions. Culture, thus plays a huge role in shaping one’s self-concept. Culture comprises of a society’s customs, beliefs, norms, artefacts, literature etc. that would have a personal connection. Most of the time, it’s culture more than anything would influence one’s self-concept because the quest for one’s identity could be quenched only in one’s culture as self-concept is more closely related to cultural components. I identify myself with my culture that formed my identity and I would differentiate myself from people from other cultures. However, I’m also able to appreciate other cultures because everyone has their own set of beliefs and customs that needs to be respected. I feel proud to identify with my culture but I also critically analyse my culture for any illogical and incongruent values that doesn’t fit to the present context.
