Before EPA , Water safety by interstate federal met the guidelines which even have deficiency of disinfection , clarification and water pressure . Also chlorination is to be done to clean water but several chlorination resistant growth occur in water leading to several disease such as gastroentritis , water borne hepatitis and salmonellosis.

Due to which several water borne diseases reported then SDWA enacted which is safe drinking water act under which , EPA and state primary means of monitoring public water system compliance with SDWA and its implementing regulations is the review and analytical results of water samples collected by public water system .

EPA work with public water system to take step to prevent or remove the contaminants and. Notify consumer so that they can make informed choices. Reports by them is help to provide the water system and regulator with the data they need to ensure that water is drinkable and safe for public and if it reports of any contamination or drinking water standards are not met then they act to prevent or remove contamination also inform public so that they can make choices.

SDWA grants EPA the power to set national health standard for drinking water to protect against both naturally occuring or man made contamination. In accordance with SDWA , EPA regulates contaminates if these threee criterias are not fulfilled which are -

1) The contaminants might have adverse health effects ,2) Its regulation with reduce public health risk and 3) substantial likelihood that contamination will occur in public water system at public health levels .

Such steps are taken to ensure safety and public health from water contamination and diseases . EPA ensures adequate contamination regulation by if public water safety measures have not met desired guidelines , EPA enact to regulate proper water decontamination and ensuring public water and assist the public water system in order to bring in compliance to the measures or guidelines of SDWA .

Thus EPA has done a good job in monitoring , regulating public water safety by ensuring that public water system met the guidelines and compliant with SDWA which is safe water drinking act , also to ensure safety and public water health from contamination EPA regulates public water system by preventing or removing contamination if not met the guidelines and inform the public so that they can make informed choices.
