Expert Solution

A patient that weights 60 lbs is ordered for Gabapentin (Neurontin) 10mg/kg/day PO in three divided doses for seizures. The pharmacy provides Neurontin with a dosage strength of 250 mg/mL. How many mL will be administered for each dose? Round to the nearest hundreth of a mL. _______ mL/dose

weight of patient 60 lbs

Ordered medicine is Gabapentin (Neurontin) 10mg/kg/day PO in three divided doses

pharmacy provides Neurontin with a dosage strength of 250 mg/mL.

Step 1 - converting pounds in kg as dose of drug is in mg/kg

1lbs = 0.45 kg

so 60 lbs = 60 x 0.45 = 27kg

step 2 - calculating dose per day

dose is 10 mg/kg/day

patient weight is 27 kg

so total dose required per day is 27 x 10 = 270mg/day devided in three dose = 270/3 = 90mg per dose

so patient need to take 90 mg three times a day

step 3 - calculating mg in ml

dosage strength of 250 mg/mL.

so that means 1ml = 250mg

we need 90mg

so we use cross multiplicationb method as shown below

250mg = 1ml

90mg = ?

= 90 x 1 / 250

=0.36ml

SO ANS IS 0.36 OR 0.4 (to round of) per dose
