Let’s start with a definition of α:β:γ particles. An alpha, beta , or gamma particle is emitted when one nucleus is transformed into another nucleus to achieve stability. Radiations are what these are. These particles have significant energy. Therefore, these particles are hazardous in nature.

  • When any of these particles collide with the surface of a tissue, the atoms are damaged.
  • The ionising strength of the particles determines the amount of the damage.
  • When radiation interacts with atoms, electrons are lost and the atoms become ionised.
  • The ionising process is accelerated by increasing the ionising power of the radiation.
  • As a result, the atoms suffer more damage. The ionising power of a particle is exactly proportional to its mass.

As a result, alpha particles have the most ionising power, whereas gamma radiation has the least. Between the two numbers, the ionising power of beta particles.


Alpha particles has the most ionising power where as gamma particles has the least.
