Describe the medical assistant’s responsibilities with regard to administration of allergenic extracts?
Allergenic extracts are used in immunotherapy for the stimulation of immunity in patients susceptible to hypersensitivity reactions and conditions such as allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis, atopic dermatitis, asthma and hay fever.In this regard, medical assistant must be capable to understand and carry out certain responsibilities related to this treatment modality. In case of patients with food allergies, subcutaneous administration of the allergens are not recommended. Before administration, the medical assistant has to check rights of drug administration such as right patient, right drug, right dose, right route and right time. Label and packaging of the allergenic extracts including expiry date and any particles must be checked before administration. The surface where mixing of the allergenic extracts are done must be disinfected. The preparation, extraction, mixing and administration of the extract must be well documented.
