Tommy is a 17 -year old Aboriginal person living in a
community in the Northern territory where there is a high level of
alcohol addiction. Tommy and his friends are unemployed and Tommy
is depressed and at times suicidal. Tommy has recently been
arrested for drunk and disorderly behavior.
1. Describe ways the legal aid system in Australia might impact on
an individual like Tommy
2. what factors associated with social, cultural and economic
background are likely to have an impact in Tommys community
3.what social and cultural factors might impact on Tommy's mental
health is it possible that for young person like Tommy, this could
lead to suicidal ideation?
1. Australian legal system has set a bood alcohol limit of 0.05 percent for licence holders. In this case, the client is below 18 years of age which is illegal to drive and drink with licence. According to the legal system of Northern Territory, it is illegal to drink and drive as it is a dry area.
2. Many people start use of alcohol as part of peer pressure, social and marital disputs, family break ups, and loss of loved ones. Social, cultural and economic factors which could affect the community are poverty, lack of self motivation, family disputs and chaos, lack of job, domestic violence are some of the many factors that could have impact on this community. Alcohol abuse can aggrevate these factors for the individual and his family and loved ones.
3. This could result in the alarming number of suicide rates in the individuals. Psychiatric conditions such as aggression and depression could be results of this anti social behaviour. Serious crimes such as theft, robbery, murder, rape and assault could also be caused by this behaviour. Alcohol abuse could change the higher mental functions and thereby result in being in a fantasy world that could comprise of delusions, hallucinations, aggression and suicidal tendency. Suicidal behaviour is commonly seen during phase of withdrawal and tolerance.
