Opioids are used as preanesthetic medication : Select one: a. To increase intestinal secretions b. To provide sedation and to reduce the amount of general anasthesia required c. To enhance respiratory depression d. To increase intracranial pressure
b) To provide sedation and to reduce the amount of general anesthesia required
Explanation
General anesthesia works by interrupting nerve signals in your brain and body. It prevents your brain from processing pain and from remembering what happened during your surgery. There are four stages in general anesthesia 1. Analgesia, 2. Delirium, 3. Surgical anesthesia, 4.Respiratory arrest
But, it is challenging for a single anesthetic agent to suppress Autonomic nervous system(ANS), It requires very high anaesthetic concentrations, resulting in haemodynamic depression that caused prolonged recovery also. So, opioids are used as preanesthetic medication because of having antinociceptive nature that is process of blocking the detection of a painful or injurious stimulus. It reduces the minimal alveolar concentration (MAC).
MAC- Minimum alveolar concentration is the concentration of a vapour in the alveoli of the lungs that is needed to prevent movement (motor response).
Note- Rest of the other information/choices are not related as preanesthethetic medication.
