Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer =

the process of oxidative phosphorylation:is the process of synthesis of ATP as aresult of transfer of electrons from NADH and FADH2 to oxygen.

when electrons travel along the electron transport chain. = there are protein complexes in the inner membrane space of mitochondria. these are complex I, II, III and IV.

when NADH and FADH2 are oxidised then electrons are released.

these electrons are carried by different mobile carriers that are present in inner membrane.

the electrons are transfer from comple I & II to complex III then complex IV.

transfer of electrons generates the energy that is used to pump the hydrogen ions or protons from mitochondrial matrix into the intermembrane space.

therefore there is generation of proton gradient in between intermembrane space & matrix.

finally electrons are accepted by oxygen.and there is conversion of oxygen to molecular water.

Describe how ATP is produced.- ATP is generated as follows:

ATP is generated by the process of chemiosmosis.

ATP is generated by enzyme ATP synthase.

When protons or hydrogen ions are travel back from intermembrane spcae into the mitochondrial matrix, then the ezyme ATP synthase directly converts the ADP and inorganic phosphate to ATP.
