Venus is known for its very high surface temperatures, caused by a huge greenhouse gas effect. However, atmospheric density, surface temperature and surface pressure are also very different from Earth’s due to a different atmospheric composition AND much greater depth. The pressure at the surface is 92 x Earth’s (it is 101,000 Pa on Earth), due to the presence of a dense atmosphere with a depth of 20 km to the top of its troposphere (ignoring the impact of very thin gases above the troposphere, just like on Earth). The surface temperature averages 460o C. The mix of gases in the Venusian atmosphere is 96.5% CO2, 3.5% N2. R, Universal gas constant = 8.314 Jmol-1 K-1 . Based on the above information and knowing how to find the atmosphere’s density, calculate g, the acceleration due to gravity on Venus (note: this is NOT a time to use Newton’s laws of gravity!).
