Ice cubes usually float in a glass of water. If you push the ice cubes down to the bottom of the glass (using a straw), would they cool the water more, or less, quickly? Explain.

Solutions

Expert Solution

If you push the ice cubes down to the bottom of the glass, would they cool the water less quickly.

As we know cold water is more dense then warm water.

Case1: Ice is floating on surface

Ice cube cool the water surrounding it. And the cold water is more dense so this goes to bottom of glass and less cold water comes up from the bottom. So ice cube is always surrounded by less cold water which implies ice cube cools the water more quickly.Since we know that rate of transfer of heat is directly proportional to the difference in temperature.

Case1: Ice is pushed to bottom

Similarly to case 1, ice cube cools the water near it making the water around the cube more dense. Now since these water have more density so they settle to the glass bottom only. So ice cube is surrounded by more cool water as compared to previous case. Temperature difference in ice cube and surrounding water is less in this case which leads to slow heat transfer or slow cooling process.
