Describe multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and summarize the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, evaluation, and treatment.
Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome
It can defined as the development of critically reversible physiological derangement that leads to one or more organs. Mostly occur due to the admission in critical care units.this condition can be fatal.
Pathophysiology
Exact cause of the condition is not known completely. However tissue damage that occur in ICUs are the most common reason of the condition.
Syndromes that mainly occur -
- Kidney failure
- respiratory distress and
- liver failure
1. Tissue hypoxia-micro vascular hypothesis
Insufficient supply of oxygen leads to hypoxaemia results in cell death and organ failures
2. Integrated Hypothesis
Due to earlier procedures compromised hemostasis may occur. It can lead to various infections.
Clinical Manifestations
- severe sepsis and hyperthermia
- sore throat
-sinus infections
- cough
-dyspnea
- pluretic chest pain
Evaluation
By checking body temperature, resting heart rates, breath rates periodically helps to evaluate the condition of the patient.
- blood test for WBC count is recommended.
Treatment
By treating MOF (multiple organ failure) and management of systemic inflammatory response syndromes ( SIRS ) patient can achieve a normal life.
Treatment with antibiotics and topical antimicrobials also helpful in treatment process.
