  • Laryngectomy is a process of surgical removal of the larynx.It is a process of removal of the larynx and separation of the airways from the nose,esophagus and mouth.
  • Generally larynx connected with mouth and nose with the lungs.
  • Larnyx is a part of the throat which houses the vocal cords.The main function of the Vocal cords is allow to produce sound.
  • If someone have laryngectomy then it will affects the person's speaking,breathing and swallowing.
  • Laryngectomy surgery done with the people who have cancer of the larynx, who have severe injury to the neck and who have developed radiation necrosis.
  • In the human body part, within the throat there are two different pathways are present. One is connected to the stomach and another is connected to the lungs.
  • The larynx and trachea is the pathway to the lungs and the esaphagus is the pathway to the stomach.
  • Larynx shares a common space with the esophagus which is known as pharynx.
  • Laryngectomy is used to remove the larynx and cutting off the connection between the mouth and lungs.
  • After the process of laryngectomy, the trachea and the esaphagus can not share the common space.Then you have to breath through a help of surgical hole in a neck which is called stoma.
  • For the normal breathing pathways, stoma is consider as a substitute because during surgery it is modified.

Preparion For Laryngectomy

  • Laryngectomy is a very long procedure which is take 5 hours to 12 hours.Under general anathesia, the surgery is performed.
  • The prepartion measure of laryngectomy includes

1.Physical test

2.Routin blood work

3.Should be fasting in the night, before the surgery begins.

4.If necessary, then smoking cessation councelling is done.

Procedure of Laryngectomy:

  • The procedure of laryngectomy is begin by the surgeon ,making incisions in the neck by which the surgeon able to remove the larynx.
  • Lymph nodes may be removed by depending on the cause of the laryngectomy.In generall, lymph nodes is a part of the immune system which is help to fight with infection.
  • In the back of the throat, the pharyx is a common space where your nasal passages,upper esaphagus,mouth,and you larynx are all togather meet.
  • Pharyngectomy is a process which is include the partial removal of pharynx.
  • When the surgeon completly remove the larynx, then the doctor will create a stoma which is used to breath.
  • After the successful completion of the surgery, by the surgical stithces, the skin on your neck and the throat muscles closed.

Physical recovery after completion of surgery

  • Most of the patients spend some days in ICU after completion of the surgery,In that time doctor will closely monitor your blood pressure,breathing,heart rate etc.
  • After surgery you must recieved oxygen through your stoma.
  • Due to the seal of your throat, you can not eat properly so the surgeon connect a feeding tube which is connect to the nose to your stomach and it provide nutrition to the body.
  • Due to the neck is swalloen and painful, then you must be received a pain medication to relief from pain.
