Expert Solution

Steps for preparing a sterile field :A sterile field refers to the space which is for placing sterile equipments required for a procedure.

  • All the required equipments for the procedure are obtained in a sterile manner.
  • Proper hygienic patient care handwash is done.
  • Choose a clean, flat and dry space for the sterile field.
  • Facing the sterile field during the whole procedureprocedure otherwise may lead to contamination of the sterile field.
  • Open the outer cover and remove the package from the dust cover.
  • The border of one inch at the edge of the sterile drape is regarded as non-sterile and must be avoided.

Application of sterile gloves:

  • Proper hand hygiene.
  • Appropriate selection of the size of gloves.
  • Hold two- inches away from sterile field without contaminating it and open the package by removing the flaps around the package.
  • Initially, glove your dominate hand by using the non- dominate hand by holding the inner aspect of cuff of the glove. Then slide it through the dominate hand.
  • Glove your non- dominate hand by sliding under the cuff of the other glove.
  • Be careful not to touch your skin or any other things .

If the equipment is touching 0.5 inches from the border of the drape, then it is regarded as non- sterile and is removed from the sterile field. Because upto one inch from the border of the drape is considered as non- sterile.
