2- Your patient has been taking Panadeine Forte on a regular basis for the past week. He complains that he is constipated, telling you he has not moved his bowels for 5 days. Describe four (4) suggestions you would make to your patient regarding the management of his constipation, in relation to diet and medication.

Panadeine forte is a medication which is a combination of paracetamol and codeine. It is used in the severe pain management. It helps to stop pain message from the brain and paracetamol is also used for fever. Before taking medication, one should consult with physician.

Common side effect of Panadeine forte

Diarrhea, constipation, rashes, sweating, vomiting, nausea, stomach pain, dizziness and drowsiness.

Should report to physician about side effect.

Medication induced constipation

The constipation is common side of some pain medication, because it slows down the movement of the stool. It Inhibit the gastric movement and peristalsis of the GI tract leads to fluid absorption and delay medication absorption making the stool hard.

Measures to prevent constipation or relief constipation

1. Dietary fiber intakes such as leafy vegetables and fibrous fruits. Whole grain, nuts and aloe vera are also beneficial for constipation. Eat fruit and vegetable with peel and adding beans to diet.

2. Maintain routine for bowel habit.

3. Drinking of fluid about 8 to 10 glasses.

4. Physical activity makes the bowel active and small amount of activity is very helpful.

5. Constipation is relief by the laxatives such as stool softeners with stimulant which soften the hard stool with bowel movement

6. Stool softener and enema can be given to lose the stool.

7. Osmotic laxative is help in the soften the stool and increase the amount of fluid or water in intestine.

8. Change in the pain medication like dose and frequency. And assess other medication that causing constipation such as antihistamine and antidepressants.
