Case study continued (questions 9–12)
When you meet with Imogen at a local coffee shop for their regular
catch-up, Imogen tells you how things are going. You say, ‘I still
get quite wound up sometimes, but I feel pretty good on the
whole’.
You suggest that Imogen continues to review and monitor her stress
management plan and the next time they meet, you can go through and
review whether or not it is working effectively.
For the next month, Imogen keeps a daily record of every stressful
incident and what happens, how she reacts, how she felt, what she
did to regain calm and whether or not it worked. She also rates her
stress levels six times a day to see if it varies much and to
identify patterns.
At the following meeting, together you review Imogen’s results. By
looking for patterns, they noticed that Imogen’s stress responses
are worse after lunch and that her stress levels are high at that
time as well. Imogen comments that she has started going to the
nearby café for takeaway food and it is taking up too much of her
lunchtime queuing and waiting for service. The café has very few
healthy food choices and she rarely enjoys lunch. Imogen says she
will begin to bring her lunch from home and to prepare it the night
before. The work lunchroom is warm and friendly with a nice outdoor
area.
You point out that the yoga classes are obviously working because
on the nights Imogen does yoga (two nights per week) her stress is
almost non-existent by the time she goes to bed, and the next
morning when she wakes up. Imogen decides to do some yoga poses and
stretches using a DVD she has at home on the nights she doesn’t go
to class. There is also discussion among the staff for arranging a
walk together during lunchtime three times a week.
Imogen is pleased with the changes she is making and even though
you had reminded her that she can also contact her workplace
Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for some counselling, she is
confident she is now on the right track.
