ps. this intro organizational behavior business not economic
Conditions justifying punishment:
1. Someone did something to hurt someone else. In this case, "hurt" can mean physical harm, stealing from someone, or anything "wrong" done to another living thing.
2.There is reason to believe this person will intentionally harm more people in the future.
I believe managers use negative reinforcement instead of punishment. This is because punishment can lead to a temporary change in behavior. Moreover, the employe can develop rebellious attitude towards the manager.Negative reinforcement is considered better in terms of correcting a wrong behavior.
Downside of using punishment:
Learned helplessness-If the punishment is frequent, the person being punished starts to believe that he can do nothing right and quits trying.
Some people become used to punishment and therefore, the act of punishment does not work on them.
Punishment can also lead to depression, anxiety, frustration, and anger.
Downside of positive reinforcement:
Too much positive reinforcement leads to praise overload which diminishes the result of positive reinforcement.
Positive enforcement that is administered haphazardly can also cause problems. As workers receive the same signals no matter what they do, which reduces the power of the signals.
I've never worked with someone who used punishment
