Discussion Board Assignment 3
Your job this week is to employ the SCAMPER model to improve/change/completely transform an existing product or service. The product or service (it has to have some kind of commercial purpose, but can also be a clear government policy, a not for profit objective, or anything else that exists that disatisfies you in some way. Stop fretting! Make it better!
Remember, to show your work!
Hint- Bus Shelters can be taken as an example
SCAMPER model stands for Substitute, combine, adapt, modify put to another use, eliminate and reverse. One can use all of the techniques to bring about a change in the product so as to find effective solutions which are long lasting and sustainable.
Substitute - Bus shelters have a rigid seat and are almost at unidentifiable places. One can replace the seats by making the seats longer and eco friendly so that led by the increase in comfort level, people use such modes of transport extensively. Eco friendly structures could also be used instead of plastic or metal one's.
Combine - They could have integrated bus location available, regarding where are the buses, so that time is utilized efficiently and consumers don't have to wait for a long duration. Current shelters do provide an approximate time, but the location will play a key role as traffic snarls can delay buses.
Adapt - Bus shelters could also be adapted to have work stations where people waiting for the bus could in the meanwhile do their work. It is especially important for long distance bus routes.
Modify - Installing air conditioners or heaters and making it an enclosed area so that passengers comfort level is high.
Put to another use - Using bus shelters as a way to collect used products, or seeking a donation and putting a donation box for a local community.
Eliminate - Get rid of people just idealing away at bus shelters and instead using a lock mechanism where only passengers with valid tickets and ID's are able to enter the shelter.
Reverse - Don't use bus shelters for its primary role but increase community participation and knowledge via shelters such as putting local information, maps, etc .
