What are the three basic types of chemical bonds? What happens to electrons in the bonding atoms in each type?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Three type of chemical bonds are

covalent bond

ionic bond

coordination bond

covalent bond : it is the bond between two elements where the two electron involved is shared between the two elements

when the electron pair is closer to one element compare to other then the bond is called polar covalent bond

examples : Cl-Cl, C-H, Br-Cl etc.

Ionic bond : it the bond formed between two ions where the electron pair is associated with one element, the bond is formed by electrostatic interaction.

examples : NaCl,

where chloride anion will have two electrons as Cl- and sodium will have postive charge as Na+ cation

coordination bond:

it is bond formed between metal and ligand the ligand will donate the electron pair to the metal and form the bond, this type of bond is called coordination or metallic bond example: PdCl2 here the chloride donate the electron pair to palladium and form the coordination bond.

Bonding is at the heart of chemistry. In chemical reactions, bonds are broken and new bonds are made. Individual atoms break free from their original bonding partners and interact and form bonds with a new bonding partner. All this happens nearly instantaneously. The interaction between the orbitals in two bonding atoms leads to molecular orbitals. After thoroughly reviewing atomic orbital theory and molecular orbital theory, respond to the following: Explain how atomic orbitals interact and give rise to molecular orbitals.
