A) Out of three soil types tested (Sand, Greenhouse Mix, and Field Soil), which would be expected to have the highest and which would have the lowest organic matter content? Why?

B) Knowing what you do about soil physical and chemical properties, which of the three soil types do you think would be the best for plant growth in a natural environment? Why?

C) Why is knowing the organic matter content of the soil important to a researcher in soil science? Why is it important to a manager (e.g. a farmer or silviculturalist)?

Solutions

Expert Solution

A) The highest organic matter found in Greenhouse Mix soil due to the water holding capacity is higher in this soil as well as it is airy while Sand soil contains the lowest organic matter due to the lowest water holding capacity in this soil.

B)  Greenhouse Mix soil is best for plant growth in a natural environment due to the following reasons:

  • it contains various types of nutrition
  • having good water holding capacity
  • having good water as well as airflow inside and many more

C) It gives a deep understanding of the properties of soil and makes the researcher well aware of it. Organic matter content helps to determine the nutrient level in soil which is helpful for the plant production and it is important to a manager because this will provide better production and they can earn more money by their production.

In addition to the clinical sample being tested, researchers would also run the assays on three additional samples: uninfected human cells (human control), RNA provided by the CDC that matched parts of the SARS-CoV-2 genome (virus control) and “samples” containing just water. Why were those controls included (what would they show the researchers, and how would the results of the controls affect the interpretation of the outcome?). Was each considered a positive or a negative control?
