Silty clay loam is any soil that contains 50 to 80% silt, 27 to 30% clay and less than 20% sand. The texture of such a soil exhibits plasticity which is derived from the clay which coats the granular fraction. Loam soils usually contain more moisture, nutrients, and humus than the sandy soils. The soil pH is slightly acidic and the potential nutrient status is usually good. Loam is considered quite ideal for agricultural and gardening purposes because it retains the nutrients well and also retains much of the water while still allowing the excess water to drain away. Such soil is found in a majority of the successful farms in many regions around the world that are known for their fertile land.
