  1. IF a collected soil sample was classified as silty clay loamusing the Soil Analysis Chart (Figure 2 in the experiment description document), what properties would you expect in the sample? (You should mention properties such as the color, porosity, and potential nutrient availability of the soil).

Solutions

Expert Solution

Silty clay loam is any soil that contains 50 to 80% silt, 27 to 30% clay and less than 20% sand. The texture of such a soil exhibits plasticity which is derived from the clay which coats the granular fraction.  Loam soils usually contain more moisture, nutrients, and humus than the sandy soils.  The soil pH is slightly acidic and the potential nutrient status is usually good. Loam is considered quite ideal for agricultural and gardening purposes because it retains the nutrients well and also retains much of the water while still allowing the excess water to drain away. Such soil is found in a majority of the successful farms in many regions around the world that are known for their fertile land.

A falling head permeability test was performed on a re-moulded silty clay soil sample 150 mm in diameter and 250 mm in length. The diameter of the standpipe was 12.7 mm. At the start of the test, the height of the water in the standpipe measured 2,236 mm above the constant water level where the soil sample was immersed in. After 7 hours and 45 minutes, the height of the water in the standpipe was measured at 1971 mm. Determine:...

A trapezoidal channel is to be designed through a silty clay alluvium on a slope of 0.0035 ft/ft. The angle of repose of the material is 35° and the Manning coefficient is 0.025. If the channel is to be designed to carry a maximum discharge of 700 cfs at a depth of 4.9 ft, determine if rip-rap will be required, and, if so, compute the stone size for both the bed and sides.

The dimension of the soil sample of a cylindrical shape is provided in Figure 1. In its natural moist state, the soil sample has the total weight of 1350 g before the water content determination. The specific gravity, Gs of the soil is given as 2.72. The values obtained for the determination of water content are: The mass of moist soil sample + mass of empty can = 1.415 kg; the mass of fully dry soil sample + mass of...

You collected a sample of soil from your backyard to use for as a source of inoculum for your isolate project, and want to use plating technique to determine the number of microbes present.
