Choosing Your Role
Which position do you want to take in the debate?
YOU CHOSE OPTION 1
The globalization supporter, the President of Global Operations for Holden-Evan Corporation, a multinational corporation
You chose the role of the globalization supporter, asserting that globalization improves the lives of people in developing and the developed world.
Opening Statement
The moderator introduces you and asks you to make an opening statement, to explain how globalization has been beneficial for people in both developed and developing countries. Your goal is to select a position that you can support and defend.
As the supporter of globalization, which opening statement is best?
YOU CHOSE OPTION 1
Globalization brings the world closer together, improves organizational efficiency, and has lifted millions out of poverty.
For your opening argument, you said that globalization brings the world closer together, improves organizational efficiency, and has lifted millions out of poverty. This was the best opening statement because it detailed the benefits of globalization for developing as well as developed countries.
Supporting Your Statement
The moderator intervenes:
“That’s a good point. But, can you add something that substantiates your claim?”
What is the best response?
YOU CHOSE OPTION 1
Developing countries can find new markets in developed countries. For example, developing countries can export their agricultural produce to other countries at higher prices than they would fetch at home. Developed countries, on the other hand, now have access to products that are not grown domestically.
You chose to support your opening statement by detailing the trade advantages globalization offers countries in the developed as well as the developing world. This was a good choice, but it did not address every aspect of your opening statement.
Critic's Response
The critic speaks:
“My primary concern about globalization is regarding the income inequality that it has created. In developing countries, the rich, who are profiting most from globalization, are becoming even richer, while the poor get poorer. In developed countries, it is only the economic elite who becoming richer, while the common citizen loses out.”
Critic Questions
The critic questions:
“You claim the strength of globalization lies in the improved efficiency of organizations and that it has lifted millions out of poverty. But what about the poverty it has created in the developed world as a result of people being thrown out of work?”
What is the best response?
YOU CHOSE OPTION 1
Some job losses are inevitable when business realities change. However, innovation also creates jobs. As a society, we need to help people who are displaced when industries change. But ignoring business realities is not the solution.
The critic raised the issue of poverty in the developed world as a result of globalization. You replied that job losses are inevitable when business realities change, and stated that innovation created jobs. This was the best response as it counters the claim that globalization is bad for workers in developed countries.
Critic's Response
The critic is given the opportunity to speak again:
“The implications of globalization are not limited to economic factors. Globalization has also promoted unethical practices. There are numerous instances where corporations have exploited the cheap labor and weak environmental laws of many developing countries. Aggressive globalization has also led to culture disintegration.”
Defending Your Claim
The critic brings up your opening statement:
“Going back to your opening statement, I would like to address the issue of outsourcing. When jobs are outsourced, the company that outsources its activities simply saves money by lowering their labor costs. So, globalization makes inequality worse by taking money from workers and giving it to corporations.”
What is your response?
YOU CHOSE OPTION 3
Workers in developing nations earn more from jobs created by globalization than they would earn from purely local jobs. In the long run, globalization also creates a rising middle class that would not have existed otherwise.
The critic states that globalization creates inequality by taking money from workers in developing nations and giving it to corporations. You chose to respond by stating that workers in developing nations earn more from jobs created by globalization than they would earn from purely local jobs. You also stated that globalization was responsible for creating a growing middle class in developing countries. This was the best choice; it counters the negative view put forth by the critic by detailing the positive economic and social impact of globalization. In a competitive market, workers will leave jobs if they can get better jobs somewhere else.
Answering The Audience
The moderator speaks:
“At this point, I’ll allow members of the audience to pose questions. Does anyone have any questions about the topic at hand?”
One of the audience member asks:
“So far you’ve explained how globalization has improved the economic well-being of people in developing nations. But how does this improve the economic well-being of the population in developed countries?”
What is your response?
YOU CHOSE OPTION 1
When countries become economically empowered, they become attractive markets for the goods and services produced in developed countries. For example, think about the opportunities created by the growing middle classes in India and China.
The audience member questioned you regarding the economic well-being of people in developed countries. You chose to respond by stating that globalization which has helped create economies in developing countries grow has also created a market in those countries for the goods and services produced in developed countries. This was the best choice as it directly answered the audience’s question and illustrated the point with an example. This is an important point, as the middle class in China is larger than the entire population of the United States. India’s middle class is also bigger than the entire United States population, and the middle classes in both countries are growing all the time..
Answering The Audience
The moderator speaks:
“We have time for one more question from this side of the audience.”
Another audience member asks:
“Has globalization really affected the environment of developing countries positively? I feel environmental hazards pose a huge threat to the developing world.”
What is your response?
YOU CHOSE OPTION 3
Globalization has resulted in the implementation of universal environmental laws. When everyone follows the same standard, we know that we will protect the environment while encouraging responsible growth.
The audience member questioned you regarding the impact of globalization in mitigating environmental hazards. You chose to respond by stating that globalization has resulted in the implementation of universal environmental laws. This was a poor choice. This statement is not true, as different countries have different environmental standards.
Questioning Your Opponent
The moderator addresses you:
“As a firm supporter of globalization, is there any question you would like to ask your opponent?”
What is your question for your opponent?
YOU CHOSE OPTION 2
I would like to bring up a fact instead. In today’s world, globalization has an effect on all the countries of the world. Its impact on countries will only increase with time. You should be embracing globalization instead of arguing against it.
You were given a chance to question your opponent. You chose to credit globalization for the emergence of new companies in the developing as well as the developed world. This was a poor choice. The emergence of new companies is a sign of progress as a whole and cannot be attributed singularly to globalization.
Closing Summary
The moderator asks you for your closing summary. Choose the statement that best summarizes your arguments in defense of globalization.
YOU CHOSE OPTION 1
Globalization has far reaching benefits that impact countries across the world. Even though it has costs, the benefits greatly outweigh the costs.
You made the closing statement that globalization has far reaching benefits that impact countries across the world and that its benefits outweigh its costs. This was the best choice, because it summed up your stance on globalization without being excessive.
ps this is business. I did the stimaluation question on this assignment basically write one or two page on my result on stimalution which i past it below. why did I made that decision that basically it. I also post the direction too on type you will see it. play I need to pass this.
Globalization is the growing interface of people, states, or countries in the course of which there is a growth of the international flow of money, ideas, along with culture. Globalization is above all an economic course of incorporation which has got social and cultural aspects. The globalization has worked to bring drastic changes from creating jobs to the increased income to the people enjoying local jobs. It has improved the lives in developing countries by adding job vacancies and in developed countries as well by creating huge market for them in the developing countries. Globalization has created a growing middle class in the developing countries which would have otherwise never existed. Globalization has led to the expansion of different corporate companies to operate its branches in foreign countries which have led to the development of quality infrastructure in these developing countries. It has led to the free trade which is a huge and definite net gain for society. It has led to the drastic movement of useful information as well of the people. My experience about being the supporter of the globalization has been easy and fun, although I was nervous many times while facing various difficult questions. I made those decisions only and only while looking at the comprehensive and positive effect of the globalization on every aspect of the life ranging from fashion styles to availability of food stuffs, from political ideology to the thinking of common people. Globalization is actually a fortunate thing that modern word has seen and is ever expanding at an unusual speed.
