Determine if the following requirements for a wet well control system, are consistent:

a) If the pump is on then the valve shall be open.

b) If the valve is closed then the water level is ≤ 10 meters.

c) If the water level is >10 meters then the pump is on.

Solutions

Expert Solution

a) If the pump is on then the valve shall be open it can either be half open or fully open to maintain the flow. The pump operates at flow 1 if the valve is fully open. When the valve is partially opened then there are frictional loses in the system and it is shown as flow 2 in the plot. Here, we can conclude that this statement is consistent

Flow rate is mentioned along y axis.

(b) If the valve is closed then the invert level of the pipe should not exceed six meters of depth at the connection to the wet well which is less than 10 so this statement seems to be consistent with the water well system.

(c) If the water level is greater than 10 then pump should not on. This statement is inconsistent as for these higher levels to operate one needs to take permission from the water corporation as it might lead to bursting of the inlet pipes.
