Introduction

Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well being not merely the absence of disease or infirmity(WHO). Health is influenced by genetics, behaviour, environmental and physical factors, medical and social factors.These all factors are interconnected. Health risk factors that increase the likelihood of a person developing a disease.

Health risk factors

1. Biological factors

2. Behavioural factors

3. Environmental factors

Some of the biological risk factors are genetic disorders, family history of any diseases, infections ,age and sex and behavioural risk factors like use of alcohol, smoking, drug use, inadequate physical activity ,diet and environmental factors like climate change, occupational hazrds can affect the health.

Biological risk factors- Some biological fators can affect the specific groups than others.Family history of cancer or any other heriditary diseases can transfer  to the offsprings .Old age group are in risk due to physical and cognitive effects of agieng.Genetic diseases like sickle cell anemia can inherit to the child if both parents carry the gene for sickle cell.Most of the biological factors are non modifiabile .So the person and the family members has to accept and lead a healthy life.

Behavioural risk factors-Behavioural factors also palys a role in health outcomes.For example if a person quit smoking or alcohol his risk of developing heart disease and liver diseases are reduced.Positive changes in the behaviour of a person can reduce the risk of a disease and will have healthy outcome.As behavioural risk factors are modifiable individual or family has to take necessary measures to have a healthy life.

Environmental risk factors-Certain environmental factors have impact on health and quality of life outcomes.For example during Monsoon season Malaria and Dengue fever are more as monsoon season is the breeding season for mosquito.As these most of the factors are modifiable individual and family make vital changes in their personal life for a healthy outcomes.

Activities that the nurse practicing in the community can implement to assist families to decrease health risks.

Introduction

Nurses can play in the prevenive health role in the community mainy by education and counselling.

Education -One of the most fundamental way that the nurse can assist the community through education. The community health nurses should be qualified and experienced to talk about the health related topics.They can provide information about stratergies for better health as well as the facilities for the screening tests.In this education nurses can impart knowledge on biological risk factors , behavioural and environmental riskfactors on health.Educate and encourage individuals to take care of their own health by effectively managing the chronic conditions.

Care giving-Community Health Nurses can perform various procedures in thecommunity like physical examination, drawing blood for investigations, other screening for illness , immunizations etc.Through these tests nurse can identify the risk patients and can provide care or refer them for the further care.

Counselling-The community health nurse helps individual, family and group to recognize and identify their problems and to find the feasible and acceptable solutions.Community health nurse has important role in caring the patient and family with Bilogical risk factors.Nurses are able to counsel the person with thier health plan and help to connect with the services they want.

Summary

As a community health nurse she has a role in  preventing and promoting health of people by identifying the risk factors and providing the measures to manage them.
