What percentage of individuals with colon cancer have a familial form of colon cancer? What is the prevalence of inherited mutations in the APC gene?
Only 2-5% of individuals with colon cancer have a familial form of Colon cancer.
Additional Information:
Colon cancer is the development of cancer on the large intestine specially colon and rectum. It is also known as colorectal cancer. Blood in the stool, change in bowel movements, weight loss are the major symptoms of this disease .
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------In human APC gene is located on chromosome 5 (q arm) it encodes a protein known as adenomatous polyposis coli or APC protein. It is the negative regulator of beta catenin protein. Mutations in the APC gene is inherited. It occurs due to deletion of five bases in the APC gene . This mutation produces abnormally short and non functional APC protein, which can not stop beta catenin, that ultimately lead to cellular over-growth and formation of polyps. These polyps can produce cancer.
