Intellectual property can be described as intangible property that is creation of human intellect and includes patents, trademarks and copyright. It also has rights against unfair competition, trade secrets, moral rights and publicity rights. It is the creation of mind such as literary, symbols, designs, and artistic works, images used in commerce, names and inventions. It is divided into two categories namely copyright and industrial property.

An idea can be considered as intellectual property as one idea might click to many people simultaneously.

The importance of research ethics is as follows:

  • Research ethics helps in promoting aim of research that includes avoidance of errors, knowledge and truth. Various norms have established that prohibits against misrepresentation of research data and thus promote truth.
  • Ethical standards help in promoting the values important for collaborative work. like mutual respect, trust, accountability and fairness. Ethical norms provide guidelines to the authors.
  • It helps in building public support and ensures that researchers are accountable to the public.
