ANSWER:

  • The sugar substitute which is produced synthetically is known as artificial sweeteners. It can not be produced by nature.
  • There are generally 5 approval artificial sweetners are present. These are follows:
  1. Aspartame
  2. Saccharin
  3. Sucralose
  4. Neotame
  5. Acesulfame-K

1. Aspartame

  • Aspartame is the combination of two amino acids such as aspartic acid and phenylalanine. It is a type of low calorie sweetener.
  • It is generally 200 times sweeter than sucrose and it also increase the flavour of fruits and citrus.
  • Too much accumulation of phenyl-alanine can cause health problem including mental retardation.

2. Saccharin

  • Saccharin is the oldest artificial sweeteners. It is derived from the word Saccharine which meaning is Sugary.
  • It is generally 300 times sweeter than sucrose and slightly bitter taste.
  • Saccharin can not be absorbed and metabolized and It does not react chemically with other food.

3. Sucralose

  • Sucralose generally produced by chlorination of sucrose.
  • Sucralose is 600 times sweetener than sucrose. It is also very high intensity.

4. Neotame

  • Neotame is the peptide derivative of aspartic acid and pheynl-alanine.It is also approved as flavour enhancer.
  • It is quickly metabolized by human.
  • Neotame is 7000 to 13000 times sweeter than sucrose and 30 to 60 times sweeter than aspartame.

5. Acesulfame-k

  • Acesulfame-k is used in baking and cooking and it does not break down by heat.
  • It can not be stored and metabolized in human body and it also applied in food as well as non-food products.
  • It is 200 times sweeter than sucrose.
  • When acesulfame react with gluose, sucrose, fructose and sucralose, it increases its intensity of sweetenes.

ADVANTAGES OF ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS:

  • It does not breakdown in the body and it also non cloric.
  • It also used for weight management.
  • It control the sugar rate in the body.
  • It is soluble in water and also heat stable.
  • It enhance the taste and also prevent from promoting the tooth decay.

DISADVANTAGES OF ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS:

  • Artificial sweetners can cause gastrointenstinal tract.
  • Too much consumption of artificial sweeteners can cause brain damge.
  • It also can cause obesity and cancer.
