Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ( COPD) is a progressive inflammatory conditions resulting in expiratory airflow limitation.

It is a chronic and progressive inflammatory conditions affecting centralband peripheral airways , lung parenchyma , and pulmonary vasculature . This keads to poorly reversible narrowing of the airways, remodeling of airways smooth muscle , increased numbers of goblets cells and mucus secreting glands and pulmonary vasculature changes resulting in pulmonary hypertension.

Sympathomimetic drugs are agent which in general mimic responses due to stimulation of sympathetic nerves. These agents are able to directly activate adrenergic receptor or to indirectly activate them by increasing norepinephrine and epinephrine ( mediators of the sympathoaerenal system ) levels.

The three sympathomimetic drug which is used in COPD are . As follows

  • Salbutamol , it is a beta 2 adrenergic receptors agonist , but it also prevent exercise induced bronchospasm.
  • Dobutamine , it is a betab-1 agonist .
  • Salmeterol , it is a long acting beta - 2 adrenergic receptor agonist.
