1) Aging in place allows older adults some level of autonomy,
control, and dignity over their own health. And challenges related
to the social determinants of health, access to an adequate care
network, and perceptions around care quality for aging adults seem
to be the biggest barriers to the goal of aging in place.
2) The World Health Organization (WHO, 2010) recognizes that gender
is an important determinant of health in two dimensions:
1) gender inequality leads to health risks for women and girls
globally and 2) addressing gender norms and roles leads to a better
understanding of how the social construction of identity.
3) Impact of culture on health.Health is a cultural concept because
culture frames and shapes how we perceive the world and our
experiences. Along with other determinants of health and disease,
culture helps to define: What patients and health care providers
believe about the causes of disease.Race, ethnicity, and
socioeconomic status are strongly associated with many health and
healthcare outcomes; thus, these factors should always be
considered as demographic variables in evaluating population
health.
4) Education can affect us throughout our lifetime and has been
shown to increase healthy behaviors and improve health outcomes,
including obesity rates. Early education is especially important
because it sets the foundation for a healthy life.
5) Social determinants of health reflect the social factors and
physical conditions of the environment in which people are born,
live, learn, play, work, and age. Also known as social and physical
determinants of health, they impact a wide range of health,
functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes.
6) Inequities in access to healthcare exist, and access to
healthcare is considered a social determinant of health. Barriers
to accessing healthcare including the lack of cultural competence
of healthcare professionals-are some significant factors that cause
inequities in healthcare.
7) Social determinants of health reflect social factors and the
physical conditions in the environment in which people are born,
live, learn, play, work and age. Also known as social and physical
determinants of
health, they impact a wide range of health, functioning and quality
of life outcomes.
8) Socioeconomic status(SES) underlies three major determinants of
health: health care, environmental exposure, and health behavior.
In addition, chronic stress associated with lower SES may also
increase morbidity and mortality.
9) The impact of housing on health is now being widely considered
by policy makers. Housing is one of the best-researched social
determinants of health, and selected housing interventions for
low-income people have been found to improve health outcomes and
decrease health care costs.
10) Income and Employment: According to Australia's Health, higher
levels of income and wealth are associated with better health
status, are generally derived from higher skilled employment and
education, and provide better access to healthy food, healthcare
and housing.Occupation is discussed as a social determinant of
health and as an initial condition in life that affects later
health outcomes.
11) Considering informal social support, being more socially
connected (higher family cohesion, martial status, and living with
someone else) is associated with greater adherence to medical
recommendations, which result in better treatment outcomes and
lowered medical costs.
