At a party with friends she says, “America’s health care system is by far the best in the world, and therefore our pregnant moms and newborn babies are the healthiest.” Based on what you read and watched in Unit 1, what might you say about at least two issues related to prenatal care, the birthing process, and the health of pregnant mothers and newborns that might suggest there is room for improvement in America?

Answer: Although government is spending a huge amount on the healthcare system, there are still health care disparities in the case of pregnant women and newborn.

Some of the major issues and factors that influences the health status of the pregnant women and newborns includes:

• High rate of neonatal deaths due time various reasons. The poor intake of the proper nutrition during pregnancy leads to complications among newborns.
• Low birth weight, genetic diseases, are common as due to lack of awareness among people regarding the nutrition intake during pregnancy, domestic violence, stress etc leads to increased complications.
• Poor facilities and therapeutic facilities for the pregnant women. Mortality rate have been increased as some of the women die during delivery itself.

It is important to provide education to the people, create awareness among people as well as increasing the healthcare facilities that can be provided to the patients. The health Upliftment program should be initiated to reduce health disparities among pregnant women, new moms.
