ASSESSMENT OF MEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT
SYSTEM
Medical Waste:
Medical waste is the type of waste which consist of hazardious
waste, infectious waste and other waste which are generated from
all type of health care organisation, hospitals, clinic, medical
laboratories etc.
ASSESSMENT
1. Hauling of medical waste:
- There are generally three methods are
available for transport of medical waste. These are,
(a)By the health care professional who is employed by the
facility
(b) By contract with a transporter registered for transporting
the medical waste.
(c) Through mail, courier or by post
2. Onsite treatment of the medical waste:
- There are basically many methods are available for On-Site
treatment of the medical waste.Discussed about important four
types,
(a)Thermal inactivation
(b)chemical disinfication
(c) Incineration
(d) Autoclaving
(a)Thermal inactivation
- It is a method of treatment of medical waste management in
which infectious agents are eliminated with high tempreture.
- Thermal activation method generally used for large volume of
waste management.
- This method is used high tempreture and longer time for waste
mangement.
(b)Chemical Disinfication
- Chemical disinfication method is used for only liquid
infectious wastes.
- It includes types of disinfectant, contact time, degree of
contamination, type of microorganism etc.
(c)Incineration
- Incineration is a method of destruction of medical waste. It is
used to reduce amount of waste upto 96%.
- Incineration is used to treat the emmission of dioxine, carbon
monoxide, particulate matter,lead,mercury,cadmium etc.
(d) Autoclaving
- Autoclaving is a process of medical waste treatment in which
the medical waste are minimized by steam sterilizing.
- Autoclaving process includes the minimization of aerosol
formation, prevention from burn when handling hot cotainer, spills
management etc.
3. Segregate of Medical waste
- For management and treatment of the medical waste segregation
of infectious waste is very essential.
- For infectious waste there should be used container, plastic
bag and distinctive.
- There should be necessary for separate medical waste from the
other sharp waste.
- There should be separate chemotherapy and pathology waste from
other medical waste.
4. Packaging
- The container in which the medical waste are packaged, must be
leak proof and rigid puncture resistance.
- Container must be red in colour.
5.Storage of medical waste
- Near the treatment site there must be a storge area
available.
- There should be minimizing the storage time.
- There must be limiting access to storage area.
6.Transporting of medical waste
- Must be avoided mechanical loading device because it may be
rupture the waste which are packaged.
- Before transport off site , the medical waste must be placed
into rigid or semi rigid container.
- The medical waste should be transporedt by closed leakproof
trucks.
- Disinfication cart should be used for transport of the
waste.
