After reflecting on my values I have come to realize that there are some core values that I regard the most and that these values significantly affect decision making on my part. These values are: Independence, Autonomy, Responsibility, Relationships and Achievement.
I spend my time, whether it is on the professional front, or my personal time, by ensuring that these values are paid heed to. At work I spend most of my time doing my work in such a manner that my independence and autonomy is never significantly compromised. I also like to pursue achievement in my field by trying to constantly improve myself and ensure that my endeavors lead to tangible results. The same is the case with regards to spending personal time. At home I like to spend as much time with my family, relatives and friends. They provide an immense sense of support and I support and care for them because I strongly acknowledge my responsibility towards my near and dear ones.
A story about a time where I exhibited one of the traits that I most value is during a project that I was doing for a new client. I am equity and financial consultant and my client wanted to make a private equity investment in a waste management company. My client roped me in for my services and my task was to determine financial feasibility of the waste management company. The client was gung ho and upbeat about making the investment. My research and my due diligence showed that the company had serious corporate governance problems and had weak internal controls. As such investment in the company can be risky. The trait that I exhibited here was that of ‘responsibility’ as I felt responsible for providing proper guidance to my client so that their investment is not exposed to risky companies and companies prone to mismanagement in future. As such I advised my client against making the investment.
