Discuss the percussion sounds heard on the abdomen
Abdominal sounds heard upon percussion can be divided into(1)Tympany(2)Dullness(3)Hyperresonance(4)Flat
Tympamy: A loud hollow sound in the four abdominal quadrants.They are loudest over gastic bubble and intestine.
Dullness:A short ,high-pitched can be heard over liver,spleen and distended bladder.
Hyperresonance:It is louder than tympany,it is heard over air filled or distended intestines.
Flat:This is a very soft ,short,abrupt sound.you can hear this suond in case of tumor mass or over the abdominal muscle.
gastric bubble is usually located between the abdominal wall and spine.
four abdominal quadrants are right upper quadrant,left upper quadrant,right lower quadrant and left lower quadrant.
distended bladder is retention of urine in the bladder due to its incapacity to void normally.
tympanitic sound -drum like sound.
percussion is done to determine the size and density of the structures and organs inside of the abdomonal cavity and to detect the presence of air or fluid.
