Two boat landings are 5.5 km apart on the same bank of a stream that flows at 8 km / hr. A motorboat makes the round trip between the two landings in 2.3 hr. What is the speed of the boat relative to the water? Answer in units of km / hr.
speed of the boat in still water is v
speed of the boat in flowing water is V
given that speed of the stream is 8 km/hr
during round trip
speed of the boat in the direction of stream is v+ 8
speed of the boat in the opposite direction of the stream is
v-8
total time taken is T = t1+ t2 = time taken up + time taken taken dowm
T = 8/(v+8) + 8/(v-8) = 2.3
solving we get v = 12.2 km / hr and v = - 5.24 km/hr
since already signs are considered,then v = 12.2 km/hr
