A 1.25 kg block is attached to a spring with spring constant 18 N/m . While the block is sitting at rest, a student hits it with a hammer and almost instantaneously gives it a speed of 42 cm/s What is the amplitude of the subsequent oscillations?
What is the block's speed at the point where x=0.25A?
Mass of the block is 1.25 Kg
Spring constant = 18 N/m
speed of the mass = 42 cm/s= 0.42 m/s
So Kinetic energy of the system =
This kinetic energy has to be stored in the potential energy of the spring
To Calculate the Amplitude of ascilation we have to equate both KE and PE
So the amplitude of the Oscillations is 0.11 m
Assuming the total Energy of the system is conserved.
So
or
So the block's speed at point where X = 0.25A is 40.6 cm/s
