Q1/Read the following passage carefully:
Assyria was kingdom of northern Mesopotamia that became the center of one of the great empires of the
ancient Middle East. It was located in what is now northern Iraq and southeastern Turkey.
The Assyrians were perhaps most famous for their fearsome army. They were a warrior society where
fighting was a part of life. ... They were known throughout the land as cruel and ruthless warriors. Two
things that made the Assyrians great warriors were their deadly chariots and their iron weapons. Battle of
Nineveh is conventionally dated between 613 and 611 BC, with 612 BC being the most supported date.
Rebelling against the Assyrians, an allied army which combined the forces of Medes and the Babylonians
besieged Nineveh and sacked 750 hectares of what was, at that time, the greatest city in the world.
Assyria was at the height of its power, but persistent difficulties controlling Babylonia would soon
develop into a major conflict. At the end of the seventh century, the Assyrian empire collapsed under the
assault of Babylonians from southern Mesopotamia and Medes, newcomers who were to establish a
kingdom in Iran. The city was destroyed in 612 BCE by a coalition led by Babylonians and Medes which
toppled the Assyrian Empire. Sizable Assyrian populations only remain in Syria, where an estimated
400,000 Assyrians live, and in Iraq, where an estimated 300,000 Assyrians live.
Answer the following questions:
1- What country is Assyria now?
2- What is the Assyrian empire famous for?
3- Who Conquered Assyrian empire?
4- How did Assyrian empire collapse?
5- Do Assyrians still exist?
