A postpartum client who is hemorrhaging after delivery is prescribed 10 units of oxytocin (Pitocin) to be delivered at 2 mU/minute. The pharmacy prepares a solution of 10 units of Pitocin in 1 liter of 0.9% Normal Saline. What should the nurse program the infusion pump to deliver to the client in ml/hour?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer:12mL/hr

Explanation:

Prescribed dose of oxytocin=10 units at a rate of 2mU/minute

Strength of prepared solution of oxytocin=10 units in one litre of 0.9% normal saline

That is 10 unit (or 10×1000 mU) correponds to 1000mL

So,2mU(milliunit) correponds to 'x' mL

By using proportions,x=2×1000/10×1000=0.2 mL

That is,0.2 mL/minute

1 hr=60 minutes

So,0.2×60=12mL/hr is the required rate to be set in the infusion pump.
