◾️Immigrants were subject to physical and mental exams to ensure they were fit for admittance to the United States. Upon arrival at Ellis Island, immigrants were ushered into a room called the Great Hall and paraded before a series of medical officers for physical inspection.

◾️Significance: The first official immigration station and long the busiest in the United States, Ellis Island was the entry point for more than 12 million newcomers. Ellis Island was once the site of the nation's busiest immigrant processing center.

◾️While the majority of immigrants during the peak years of U.S. immigration arrived through Ellis Island (more than 1 million in 1907 alone), millions more immigrated through other American ports including Castle Garden, which served New York from 1855-1890;

◾️The Ellis Island inspection process took several hours, and did not guarantee that an individual or their family would pass. Immigrants endured medical inspections and hours of legal questioning before they were allowed to step on American soil. Many were detained because they were sick.

◾️More than 120,000 immigrants were sent back to their countries of origin, and during the island's half-century of operation more than 3,500 immigrants died there. Ellis Island waylaid certain arrivals, including those likely to become public charges, such as unescorted women and children.

Ellis Island opened to the public in 1976. Today, visitors can tour the Ellis Island Museum of Immigration in the restored Main Arrivals Hall and trace their ancestors through millions of immigrant arrival records made available to the public in 2001.

Immigration gives the United States an economic edge in the world economy. Immigrants bring innovative ideas and entrepreneurial spirit to the U.S. economy. They provide business contacts to other markets, enhancing America's ability to trade and invest profitably in the global economy.So based on the discussion, today it is not possible in society because, all of the peoples have self care, responsibilities to our society.
