17 The nurse receives an order to administered an
antibiotic in NS 30 mL in 15 mins using and infusion pump. What
rate should the nurse set the infusion pump
18 The nurse is reviewing the patient’s medication
administration record (MAR) and acknowledged the order to
administer 0.45% NaCl 600 mL IV in 3hrs using an infusing pump.
What would be the flow rate of the iv infusion?
19 The nurse is hanging an IV D5w 0.45% saline 500 mL
IV to infuse at 165 mL/hr. what is the drop rate for the IV tubing
has a drop factor (DF) of 10 gtt/mL is used?
20 The nurse is verifying the IV fluid that the
student nurse initiated to the patient the prescription is NS 3L IV
to infuse atb125 mL/hr with the drop factor 15 gtt/mL. calculate
the flow rate in gtt/min
Flow Rate Calculation Formula= ( volume in ml x drip factor) / time in minute
Question 1:
According to the first question
Amount of Fluid= 30 ml Infusion Time =15 min
when drip factor is not given we generally consider it 10 gtts/ml
then, (30ml x 10)/15min = 20 gtts per minute
Question 2:
With same formula as Question 1
Amount of Fluid = 600ml Infusion Time =3 hrs or 180 minutes
then, (600ml x 10)/ 180 min = 33 gtts per minute
Question 3
Here in the 3 question fluid rate of 165ml per hour is given with drop factor of 10. Then, we must not pay attention to the total amount of fluid. We can directly calculate the drop rate.
First, we would convert 165ml per hour into ml per minute by dividing 165ml/hr by 60. here we will get 2.75 ml per minute.
Now, multiply 2.75 ml per min by drip factor
2.75 ml/min x 10 = 27.5 or approx. 28 gtts per min.
Question 4
just like as question 3. Here we do the same formulation.
Drip Factor given = 15 gtts per ml Fluid Rate= 125 ml per hour or 2.08 ml per minute
Now, multiply 2.08 ml per min by drop factor
2.08 ml/min x 15 = 31.2 gtts/ min approx. 31 gtts/ min
