An air-conditioning plant is designed to maintain a room at a condition of 20oC dry bulb and specific humidity 0.0079 when the outside condition is 30oC dry bulb and 40% percentage saturation and the corresponding heat gains are 18000 W (sensible) and 3600 (latent). The supply air contains one-third outside air by mass and the supply temperature is to be 15oC dry bulb. The plant consists of a mixing chamber for fresh and recirculated air, an air washer with chilled spray water with an efficiency of 80%, an after heater battery and supply fan. Neglecting temperature changes in fan and ducting, calculate:
a. The mass flow rat of supply air necessary;
b. The specific humidity of the supply air;
c. The cooling duty of the washer;
d. The heating duty of the after heater
(use the psychrometric chart assuming the barometric pressure is 1.001325 bar)

An air conditioning company servicing a certain machine room guarantees that the temperature in the room stays below 20o C. Due to malfunctioning of the equipment operating in the machine room, it is suspected that the average temperature actually exceeds 20o for more or less extended periods of time. Seven temperature measurements are collected throughout the day and the following temperatures are observed, 20.8, 20.2, 20.9, 21.5, 22.2, 21.2, 19.8. Assuming that the temperature is at least approximately normally distributed,...

In an air-conditioning system, dry air flows over tubes carrying refrigerant R134a. The air is cooled by transferring heat to the R134a; the air enters with a volume flow rate of 0.75 m3 s–1 at 305 K and 100 kPa, and it exits at 290 K and 95 kPa. The R134a enters at 4 bar in a vapor-liquid coexistence state with a quality of 20%; it exits at 4 bar and 30 °C. Ignoring heat transfer at the outer surface...
