The patient’s bill of rights is a list of guarantees for those receiving medical care. It may take the form of a law or a non-binding declaration. Typically a patient’s bill of rights guarantees patients information, fair treatment and autonomy over medical decisions, among other rights.
The right of patient to have control over medical care is involved in the right to make decisions about their medical care without their health care provider trying to influence the decision. Patient autonomy does allow for health care providers to educate the patient but does not allow the health care provider to make the decision for the patient.
Medical assistants are expected to be committed to the doctor’s patients and provide them with the best care possible within the scope of practice. This care must reflect their belief in the value and dignity of every person as an individual. Further, medical assistants must understand the patient’s rights and responsibilities as they apply to provide and receive health care services.
A patient has the right to quality care and treatment consistent with available resources and generally accepted standards. The patient has the right to refuse treatment to the extent permitted by law and government regulations. However, the patient should be informed of the consequences of refusal.
A patient is responsible for complying with the medical treatment plan, including follow-up care recommended by medical assistance.
