Explain how the balance of attractive and repulsive forces in the nucleus is affected by the contents of the nucleus and the locations of those contents

Solutions

Expert Solution

inside the nucleus , there are two types of particles present that is Protons and Neutrons.

The protons are postively charged , whereas neutrons are neutral particles. So primarity there are electrostatic repulsive forces between protons confined in a very small volume of nucleus which is about (10^[-45]) m^3 . the protons repel each other because , all the protons are positively charged and we know that the like charges repel each other whereas the unlike charges attract each other. apart from proton - proton repulsions , there are electrostatic attraction between the electrons revolving in the orbits and the protons in the nucleus. hence the electrons attracts the protons towards themselves , so we can say that both Proton- Proton repulsions , and Electron - proton attacrction results in destabilization of the nucleus.

Apart from the above mentioned destabilizing factors , there are strong nuclear forces present inside the nucleus which binds protons and neutrons inside the small volume of nucleus. The nuclear forces are independent of the charge and always attractive in nature and also they are the strongest forces in nature , therefore it dominates over the two destabilising forces as explained above.

ultimately we can say that the nucleus has a very small volume which stores all of the positive charge on an atom and most of the mass of an atom and the contents inside the nucleus are held by strong nuclear forces of attraction.
