Simple network management protocol uses request-response and trap mechanism.

The basic different between them is that trap message do not requires any response while request-response requires the response from the management.

Pros of request-response:

• If the response message is lost the sender becomes aware of the situation and will again sent the request.

• Request-response have direct involvement of the managing entity and the receiver.

Cons of request-response:

• Since two messages are involved so overhead is high.

• Request response have greater notification time as managing entity will identify the issue and then it will send the request and will wait for the response.

• Consumption of the bandwidth.

Pros of trap mechanism:

• Automatically generated when an event triggers the condition.

• Association of the priority with the trap. Different traps have different priorities the critical traps have the highest priority.

• Traps contains details about the network device, event that generates its, and time of the event.

• Trap mechanism has minimum notification time.

• Trap mechanism is robust because when the message is lost the copy is sent.

Cons of request-response:

• If the trap message is lost the receiver is not aware of the vent that happens.

• If many traps occur, then such a situation consumes the network bandwidth.

• In some cases, trap, can be redundant.
