Paul Farmer: I Believe in Health Care as a Human Right.
Every human being has the right to health. The World Health Organisation defines the right to health as a complete state of physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. The right to health is closely interconnected with numerous other human rights and it includes the following integrated and essential features such as Availability, Accessibility, Acceptability, and Quality. The right to health was recognized as a human right in the 1966 International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. We frequently associate the right to health with access to health care and the building of hospitals. This is correct, but the right to health extends further. It includes a wide range of factors that can help us to lead a healthy life.
We should agree to the fact that the right to health must be enjoyed without discrimination on the grounds of race, age, ethnicity, or any other status.
The right to health includes,The right to access to a system of health protection providing equality of opportunity for everyone to enjoy the highest attainable level of health, The right to prevention, treatment, and control of diseases and Access to essential medicines.
On the other hand there are several reasons why healthcare should not be considered as a human right in the event of cosmetic surgery, infertility treatments and organ transplantations. Health Care, like all other services, comes at a financial cost. While we should strive to make health care available and affordable to all.
