patient taking lithium what happen?
Lithium is used to treat a number of disorders such as mania, hypomania and depression.this medicine also taken by many people long term as a mood stabiliser to prevent such episodes.
It is very important to have the right amount of lithium in your body.too much lithium may lead to unwanted effects such as ,
* nausea : feeling of loathing or disgust
* diarrhea : loose stools
* shaking of hands
* dizziness: A sensation of spinning around and losing one's balance.
* twitching : sudden jerking or convulsive movement.
* confusion: uncleared mind
* increase amount of urine
If it is like this happen inform to the doctor immediately.
There is only a small difference between the correct amount of lithium and too much lithium.therefore it is important that your doctor monitor you closely during treatment.keep all medical and laboratory appointments while you are taking lithium.
You should be monitored when taking lithium,
* calcium levels: A serum calcium level should be checked yearly as lithium may cause hypoparathyroidism.
* kidney tests: A BUN and creatinine should be drawn at the beginning of treatment,regularly during treatment, and if any symptoms of kidney disease become evident.
